Directories vs. Search Engines

It is important to understand what the terms directories and search engines in web marketing context means in order to understand the difference between them.

A directory is a site that contains links to other sites which are organized into various categories. Some seasoned SEO professional feel that to drive traffic to your site, one should get their site’s listed in directories that are categorized. These are specific directories that cover links of specific topics thereby attracting visitors interested in that specific topic. Visitors coming to your site from a directory are more likely to be interested in your service or product.

A search engine is a program that collects or retrieves data (from every web site and every web page within a web page) for specified keywords and returns the list of documents.

A search engine periodically spider webpages and add the textual information into their database while a directory is a categorized index which is usually based on human editors reviewing and indexing sites.

A search engine "creeps the net" through sequentially scanning links between websites. Yahoo is probably the most well known directory on the net. Yahoo Search is a very important player on the field. Another very important index is the Open Directory Project (ODP). Receiving your place in the ODP, almost guarantees that Google will in short order index your site greedily. The net is packed up with many directories, but Yahoo and ODP are the most important when it comes to reaching website-traffic and to be indexed in Google. Making the search engines & directory submissions helps to achieve relevant search engine traffic. But the crux is that one should do within the framework of the directories and search engines.
